5 Myths About Lifestyle Photography (And What Actually Matters)

March 17, 2025

Let’s be real—booking a lifestyle photography session with your family can feel overwhelming. Maybe you’re worried about how your kids will behave, what you should wear, or whether your home is “photo-worthy.” You’re not alone!

But here’s the thing: most of these worries come from common myths about family photography that just aren’t true. As a lifestyle family photographer, I’ve heard it all—and I’m here to set the record straight.

So, let’s bust five of the biggest myths holding you back from capturing the beautiful, real moments of your family’s life.

Myth #1: “My kids won’t behave, so we won’t get good photos.”

What Actually Matters:

Your kids don’t need to sit still or smile on command to get amazing photos.

One of the biggest misconceptions about lifestyle photography is that kids need to be perfectly behaved. But let’s be honest—kids are kids! They wiggle, they run, they get distracted, and they make silly faces. And that’s exactly what makes lifestyle photography so special.

Instead of forcing stiff poses, I encourage kids to play, explore, and just be themselves. Some of the best photos happen in the in-between moments—the giggles, the cuddles, the curiosity, and even the chaos.

So, if your child is a little wild? Perfect. Let them be.

Myth #2: “We need a picture-perfect house or outdoor location.”

What Actually Matters:

The best backdrop for lifestyle photos with your family is wherever your family feels most at home.

I get it—you might be looking around your house thinking, “There’s no way this will look good in photos.” But let me assure you, you don’t need a Pinterest-perfect home for beautiful family photos.

Some of my favorite sessions happen in homes that are lived-in, cozy, and filled with love. A simple corner by a window, the family couch, or even a messy bed can be the perfect setting.

And if you’re not feeling an at-home session? No worries! There’s no need to stress over the “perfect” location. A simple park, an open field, or even an alleyway with great light can create stunning images. It’s all about the people, not the place.

Myth #3: “I don’t feel confident right now.”

What Actually Matters:

Your family loves you exactly as you are—and that’s what they’ll want to remember.

I hear this one a lot: “I just don’t feel like my best self right now.” Maybe you’re in the middle of the less-than-glamourous postpartum phase, or maybe life has been too hectic to think about getting “photo-ready.”

But here’s the truth: Your kids don’t care how your hair looks. They won’t remember if you had the “perfect” outfit. What they WILL remember is how you held them, how you looked at them with love, and how much fun you had together.

Years from now, when you look back on these photos, you won’t be thinking about your hair or outfit. You’ll be remembering how tiny their hands were in yours, the way they snuggled into your arms, and how much love filled the moment.

So don’t wait for the “perfect time”—because this season of life, right now, is already worth remembering.

Myth #4: “We have to wear perfectly coordinated outfits.”

What Actually Matters:

Forget the pressure to match perfectly—cohesive, effortless styling is much easier than you think!

Here’s the secret: Start with your outfit first. Choose something you feel great in, whether it’s a cozy sweater, a flowy dress, or your go-to jeans. Then, use 1-3 complementary colors from your outfit as a base for the rest of the family.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully.
  • Textures & subtle patterns (like knits, linen, or gentle stripes) add warmth without overwhelming.
  • Bare feet > shoes for cozy, in-home sessions.

Myth #5: “We need to pose perfectly.”

What Actually Matters:

Real > perfect. The best moments happen when you forget the camera is even there.

If the thought of getting your family to pose for a perfect, smiling shot makes you break out in stress sweats—let me take that pressure off your plate.

I don’t expect kids to stand still, and I don’t expect parents to have model-level posing skills. Instead, I guide you into natural interactions that bring out genuine smiles, laughter, and connection.

I’ll prompt your little one to tell you a funny secret, encourage siblings to run toward each other for a big hug, or have you sway back and forth with your baby in your arms. No awkward, stiff poses—just natural moments that feel like you.

The Truth About Lifestyle Photography? It’s About Love, Not Perfection.

At the end of the day, lifestyle photography isn’t about perfect behavior, pristine homes, or matching outfits. It’s about capturing the love, joy, and chaos that make your family uniquely yours.

So if you’ve been putting off booking a session because of one of these myths, consider this your sign—it’s time to embrace the now.

I’d love to help you bottle up this season of life in images you’ll cherish forever.

Let’s make some magic. Book a lifestyle session with your family today!

Meet mackenzie

I’m a mom of two, so I feel this deep down in my heart. There are the days when bedtime can’t come soon enough. And the days when I look at them and feel a love so strong it takes my breath away. But no matter the day or the mess or the spicy attitudes (so spicy, you guys) — I know in my bones that each day I get with them matters. And years from now, when hopefully the mess is less (not so sure about the attitude), every time you hold your photos in your hands, you’ll remember just how meaningful it was to parent each phase of these wonderful, weird, perfectly formed little humans.

But man, you're gonna miss this some day

PARENTING IS HARD

I'd love to be your Cleveland photographer to help you remember it all.
